About this site

This site is a place where I try to give people useful, important information. It contains information about emotional intelligence, some tools and resources, and some new ideas.

I was born and raised in the USA but for the past ten years or so I have been traveling around the world. I grew up believing that the USA was a model of freedom and democracy in the world. Now I see that there are other countries which actually do a better job of living up to those ideals. I also feel disillusioned and discouraged by how America has been using its power and influence. I would like to see it the America use its power only to help -- not to hurt, kill and destroy. I would like to see the USA become the leaders in non lethal and non destructive weapons, for example, as well as the leaders in mediation and non-violent conflict resolution. I would like to see the USA and all Americans make friends, not enemies.

I am now 51 years old. I first began to travel internationally at the age of 25. I have been on every (non-frozen) continent and have visited schools in many countries. I have seen a lot, learned a lot and have a lot of stories to tell.

Part of my site is devoted to the teenagers around the world who are cutting and hurting themselves because they are in so much emotional pain from abuses of all kinds, particularly emotional and psychological from the confusing, frightening and invalidating environments they have no choice but to either try to survive in, or to take their own lives as a way of stopping the pain. This site offers them a new way to look at themselves, their society, with its beliefs, religions, and schools. It offers them a new way to look at the world, and offers them a way to participate in making it better.

My site acknowledges the pain and problems in the world, but offers young and old a new direction. It offers encouragement and emotional support. It let's those who feel pain and frustration to know they are not alone and are not crazy. This site is helping create a vision of a world which is more livable for them, more sustainable, more humane.

The site is also for teachers, educators, psychologists, attorneys, social workers and school counselors who want resources to help people develop their emotional intelligence and practical skills. It is especially for those who do not accept the status quo as being the best we can do. My writing is sometimes non-politically correct and it may offend you or challenge some of your beliefs, but please try to take everything I say with a grain of salt and realize my strong words come from many years of my own frustration. Please try to take what you can and apply it to help yourself and others. I am in the process of separating my editorial writing from the resources section of the site, but right now it is all mixed together. If you would like to volunteer to help or if you have any constructive criticism, please let me know by using this link.

Questions for the day:

1. Was Ashley Casale behaving in an emotonally intelligent way to miss her university classes and march for peace across the USA?

2. How many high school authorities in the USA would say that marching for peace would be an excused absence?

3. Would a teen in West Bend, Wisconsin go to jail for missing school to march for peace?

Write me with your thoughts. S. Hein
